"To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you." — Lewis B. Smedes

Forgiveness is one of the most transformative and courageous acts of self-compassion. When we hold onto resentment—toward others, the past, or even ourselves—it becomes heavy, like carrying stones in our pockets. Letting go is not about excusing or forgetting; it’s about choosing to free ourselves, so we can create space for healing and peace.

I’ve returned to this practice again and again—after breakups, difficult family moments, and even when I needed to forgive myself. Many moons ago, during the aftermath of a breakup, I listened to a guided hypnosis about forgiveness nearly every day. At first, I could barely get through it—the emotions were raw, heavy, and loud. But I stayed with it, and I noticed that each day, the charge softened. Over time, what had been an anchor pulling me down became something I could hold lightly, with understanding and compassion. I reframed the story. I let go. And I found freedom where there had only been pain.

Forgiveness is a process. Today is your starting point, your invitation to take that first brave step toward release.

Guided Ritual: Forgiveness Meditation

Set aside 15 minutes for this guided meditation designed to help you release resentment and cultivate compassion. Allow yourself to envision the person, memory, or part of yourself that you’re ready to forgive. Breathe deeply, and trust that you’re safe to let go. This is not about erasing—it’s about loosening the hold.
